Transitive and Intransitive Verbs

Verbs can be transitive, intransitive, or both. It can be very useful to know which a verb is because it helps improve your writing. Most good dictionaries will label verbs as being transitive (V.T.) or Intransitive (V.I.).

Check your dictionary to see if different abbreviations are used.

Some of them are still being improved.

A transitive verb has an object whereas an intransitive verb does not.

  • Transitive = verb + object
  • We eat pizza.
  • She made investments.
  • He rang the church tower bells.
  • Intransitive = verb (no object)
  • We feel great!
  • It went well.
  • The telephone rang three times.
