Demonstrative Pronouns

There are only four demonstrative pronouns: This, that, these, and those.
They can be used as subjects or objects by themselves or with another noun to become more specific.

  • This is my favorite game.
  • This game is my favorite.
  • That is a very old tree.
  • That tree is very old.
  • These cookies are great!
  • What about those books?

The demonstrative pronouns are differentiated by two characteristics: proximity and quantity.

This and that are singular. (only one)

These and those are plural. (two or more)

This and These are close/near.

That and Those are far.
