Count and non count nouns in English


Count & Non count nouns (countable and uncountable nouns)

ExampleDescription
I ate some bananas, pears, plums, and apples. In other words, I ate some fruit.

I rearranged the furniture.

I added some salt to the shaker.

Many non count nouns refer to a category or class. The category or class is made up of individuals which fit. It could be a mass of almost identical particles or elements.

They can be measured by using containers and units of measurement. 1 spoonful, 2 bottles of ..,etc

I give you hope.

I wish you luck.

I bring you joy.

I have to do my homework.

Some non count nouns are abstract ideas (concepts). They are not physical.
Joe has brown hair.

Jim has a hair on his coat.

Many nouns will change from count to non count depending on the idea.
The wind is cold and powerful.A phenomenon of nature, such as wind, is normally considered to be uncountable.
