Previously, one had to submit a website or blog to the search engine for indexing, but now as long as the website or blog is linked to from a site or blog already in the index, the search engine will start browsing and adding pages.  The more links there are to a site's content, the more popular it will appear to the search engine and the more likely it's pages will be added.  Those backlinks are also important for page and site ranking.
