Some external links are redirected so the click can be recorded in a database for statistics and/or affiliate marketing tracking (so the commission can be paid if the visitor makes a purchase). While an advertiser might want to know how many clicks were made to their banner advertisement, the redirect might keep a link from helping the other website improve its ranking in the search engines.
