Content Farm

A content farm is a website that takes articles that are created or submitted by users or by a team of paid employees. Content farms are not focused websites. They are not about just one topic, but instead typically have a nonsense name (made up name) or a name that has the word article or page

People often submit articles or create pages on content farms in order to get more traffic to their website or blog. Since search engines like Google will normally give the highest ranking to a website with the most backlinks, the best way to get traffic is to include links from the article site or "content farm" to your main site.   Until recently an article sent to a content farm would get a much higher SERP position than the same article already posted on your own website.

Although an adjustment made at Google near the end of Feb. 2011 is supposed to fix content farm or article site ranking so high, only time will tell. In any case as long as backlinks are the best way to get ranking, people will keep using content farms for this purpose.
